A Message from President Joe Hartman

Dear Golden Bears,

As my wife Karen and I begin our time at Western New England University (WNE), we do so with a deep sense of gratitude and anticipation. From my earliest visits, what stood out was not just the strength of the institution but the warmth of its people. This is a community that takes pride in what it does—and, just as importantly, in who it serves.

That impression has only deepened in the weeks and months since. It has been a privilege to begin engaging with campus life, including participating in #WNEgives and connecting with members of the community.

What draws me most to WNE is its clarity of mission. This is a university where education truly launches lives—where students across the arts and sciences, business, engineering, health professions, and law are prepared not only for careers but for meaningful contributions to their communities. That breadth matters. A comprehensive education, grounded in both intellectual curiosity and professional preparation, equips graduates to adapt, lead, and grow over time.

I have long believed that I would not be the engineer or the educator I am today without that kind of broad foundation. At WNE, that philosophy is not aspirational—it is current practice.

As I step into this role, I am committed to building on the University’s strengths and elevating the impact of the work this community already does so well. There is a powerful story here: of students prepared for opportunity, of faculty deeply invested in their success, and of alumni whose lives reflect the value of a WNE education. It is a story worth telling more broadly and more boldly.

In the months ahead, Karen and I look forward to becoming part of this community in a meaningful way: attending events, meeting students, connecting with alumni, and listening. Leadership, at its core, is about presence and partnership, and we are eager to engage fully in the life of the University.

There is real momentum here at Western New England University, and real opportunity ahead. I am grateful to begin this next chapter with you and to help ensure that the University continues to prepare students for lives of purpose, achievement, and impact.

Warm regards,
