President’s Donor Reception Celebrates Alumni Philanthropy and Student Success

The warmth and enthusiasm of the esteemed guests illuminated the evening at the annual President’s Donor Reception held on Wednesday, September 25, at GreatHorse Country Club. Over 100 alumni, families, friends, faculty, and staff were celebrated for their philanthropic contributions to Western New England University (WNE). The evening was kicked off by the Golden Voices choir with a vibrant and lively rendition of Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me.” President Robert Johnson followed the performance sharing his appreciation for the unwavering belief in the University’s mission. He stressed that none of it would be possible without the support of our dedicated community who always “lend a hand and a shoulder to lean on.”

Nick LaPier ’90, chair of the board of trustees, assisted President Johnson and Vice President for University Advancement, Dean Hickey with inducting the newest Benefactor’s Society and Cupola Society members. The Benefactor’s Award recipients included Sandra Zieminski and Carl Zieminski, Jr. in memory of the late Carl Zieminski, Sr. ’66/G’70, for their substantial gift to the Zieminski Family Industrial Engineering Lab. Additionally, Alison and Stefan Sjoberg L’18/G’18, were welcomed into the Cupola Society for their intent to leave the University in their estate plans.

Jaylen Hawkins, a senior civil engineering student, captain of the men’s wrestling team, and recipient of the William and Iona Sleith Endowed Scholarship from Danbury, Conn., concluded the evening’s remarks. He took the time to reflect upon his journey, crediting athletics and the extraordinary WNE experience for shaping him into the young man he is today. He expressed eagerness to fulfill his responsibility of making a difference in the world upon graduating in the spring.
